FUELLING THE FUTURE

Out Of Thin Air

VISION

A circular carbon economy

Oota Cleantech sees a future where fossil fuels are left in the ground.

We design and manufacture enabling technology for the sustainable production of carbon-neutral replacements for fossil fuels, starting with our carbon dioxide to ethylene electrochemical system.

Our mission is to build a fully integrated refinery system from carbon capture to high quality carbon-neutral fuels and lubricants. Our company is committed to reshaping the way the world perceives carbon emissions - not as pollution, but as a resource, to be recycled again and again.

DEEP TECH

Oota Cleantech is a startup company focused on the design and commercialisation of scalable, low-cost electrolysers and supporting systems for converting carbon dioxide into carbon-neutral ethylene.

Ethylene is a widely used industrial chemical that can be converted into carbon-neutral direct replacements for fossil fuels.

ETHYLENE
An essential chemical building block

Our innovative electrochemical technology generates  carbon-neutral ethylene 'out of thin air' using a green chemistry process.  Renewable energy and water are utilised to recycle carbon dioxide into ethylene. Ethylene is the key building block of the global chemical industry that uses in excess of 225 million tonnes per year. It can be used to make products including fuels, lubricants, plastics and industrial chemicals. Ethylene is particularly ideal for manufacturing high quality, carbon-neutral fuels and lubricants.

Globally, nearly all ethylene is obtained from fossil fuels and its production emits significant amounts of carbon dioxide. Australia currently has no sovereign ethylene production capability, with all ethylene being imported.

Products made using carbon-neutral ethylene will enable industry, heavy transportation, aviation and marine make a sustainable transition to net zero.

NATURAL INGENUITY

Our innovative scalable design is based on non-toxic green chemistry. Our technology uses no exotic materials, rare or precious metals. Our system operates safely and effective at room temperature and low pressure. The process uses only environmentally benign inputs and materials and does not produce any hazardous waste streams. Our by-products are oxygen and hydrogen, both useful chemicals.

SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS

By replacing fossil derived petroleum products with carbon-neutral ones derived from our system, it becomes possible to use internal combustion engine powered equipment with zero-carbon emissions. We use carbon dioxide to make our products and when they are burned, the carbon dioxide returns to the air.

Displacing fossil fuel consumption is critical to our future, and this is one technology to help that journey.

Pioneering Sustainable Innovations through Necessity and Practicality

Due to our location in regional Far North Queensland, Australia we have had to rely on sheer ingenuity and creativity to design and make many components and auxiliary systems.  Our electrochemical system utilises custom-made components, algorithms and manufacturing processes. Our advanced manufacturing methods are dedicated to minimising environmental impact and maximising resource efficiency.

Future Plans

RENEWABLE ENERGY

Our technology can help stabilise the grid by utilising surplus renewable electricity capacity. The agile Oota system can effectively ramp up or down quickly in response to the local grid needs, to utilise excess renewable energy to avoid curtailment.  By regulating the local grid, damaging transient loads on wind turbines are reduced, significantly increasing the life of the turbines.

REGIONAL RESILIENCE

Our technology can help enable manufacturing of carbon-neutral fuels in remote and regional areas that have access to renewables. Decentralised manufacture would reduce carbon emissions in transportation, improve regional resilience and ensure local supply security when the world is increasingly affected by geopolitical and  natural disasters.

PILOT PLANT

Building on the success of our electrochemical carbon dioxide to ethylene pilot plant, we are now looking to build a micro-refinery prototype to turn ethylene into carbon-neutral diesel.

CARBON-NEUTRAL PRODUCTS

Our first target product will be carbon-neutral diesel.  Our system will potentially unlock opportunities to replace products derived from fossil fuels with clean carbon-neutral, drop-in replacements from sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to lubricants.

OUR STORY

We are a small and nimble team of chemistry, arts, IT and engineering professionals based in Australia.

One of our founders has more than a decade of specialist fuel and lubricant testing and quality assurance experience as the Former Fuels Laboratory Team Leader and South Pacific Quality Assurance Co-ordinator for Mobil Oil Australia, now ExxonMobil.  Building on this experience, the founders have spent over 20 years exploring scalable pathways for producing sustainable alternatives for fossil fuel products. This research identified the electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide to ethylene as being the most promising pathway. We then developed an integrated process and a novel, low-cost and scalable electrolyser design that forms the heart of our system.

Our diverse skill sets, practical skills and ingenuity have enabled us to make rapid progress. Our journey continues as we build our fully integrated pilot plant.
