FUELLING THE FUTURE

Out Of Thin Air

WHAT IS OOTA?

Building a circular carbon economy

Oota's innovative and modular electrochemical technology generates carbon-neutral ethylene 'Out Of Thin Air' using a green chemistry process.

Renewable energy and water are used to recycle carbon dioxide into ethylene. Ethylene is the gateway chemical to replacing fossil fuels.

OUR VISION

Oota Cleantech is building a future where fossil fuels are left in the ground and replaced with carbon-neutral alternatives.

Oota's technology uses a renewable, abundant resource - carbon dioxide - and recycles it to create products that the world needs.

WHAT WE DO

Deep tech

Oota Cleantech is a startup company focused on the design and commercialisation of scalable, electrolysers and supporting systems for converting carbon dioxide into carbon-neutral ethylene.
Ethylene is a widely used industrial chemical that can be converted into carbon-neutral direct replacements for fossil fuels.

Ethylene: An essential chemical building block

Ethylene is the key building block of the global chemical industry that uses in excess of 225 million tonnes per year.

Ethylene can be used to make high-quality products including:

  • fuels

  • lubricants

  • plastics

  • industrial chemicals

Nearly all ethylene is obtained from fossil fuels and its production emits significant amounts of carbon dioxide. Australia currently has no sovereign ethylene production capability, with all ethylene being imported.

Products made using carbon-neutral ethylene will enable industry, heavy transportation, aviation and marine make a sustainable transition to net zero. Our technology also makes cleaner products, with fewer contaminants than those made from fossil fuels.

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT

Natural ingenuity

Our technology is designed to be truly sustainable and carbon neutral throughout all stages of manufacture, from building materials to byproducts to end-of-life considerations for the components.

Located in regional Far North Queensland, Australia, Oota Cleantech uses ingenuity and creativity to design and custom-build electrolyser components, auxiliary systems, control algorithms and manufacturing processes.

OUR MISSION

A sustainable future

CARBON-NEUTRAL PRODUCTS

Building on the electrochemical carbon dioxide to ethylene pilot plant, a gas separation unit is being designed to isolate the ethylene gas. A micro-refinery will fully complete the process of turning carbon dioxide into carbon-neutral fuels and lubricants.

RENEWABLE ENERGY

This technology can help stabilise the grid by utilising surplus renewable electricity capacity. The agile Oota system can effectively ramp up or down quickly in response to the local grid needs, to utilise excess renewable energy to avoid curtailment. For behind the meter applications, the technology maximises the use of the renewable assets, reducing losses during periods of traditional surplus or unfavourable market conditions.

REGIONAL RESILIENCE

This technology can help enable manufacturing of carbon-neutral fuels in remote and regional areas that have access to renewables. Decentralised manufacture would reduce carbon emissions in transportation, improve regional resilience and ensure local supply security when the world is increasingly affected by geopolitical and  natural disasters.

COLLABORATION

Partner with Oota

Oota is seeking strategic partners to collaborate on scaling its technology, developing pilot projects, and expanding into new markets. Together, we can drive the adoption of carbon-neutral ethylene, fuels and lubricants and make a significant impact on global sustainability efforts.

OUR STORY

We are a small team of chemistry, arts, IT and engineering professionals based in Australia.

One of our founders has more than a decade of specialist fuel and lubricant testing and quality assurance experience as the Former Fuels Laboratory Team Leader and South Pacific Quality Assurance Co-ordinator for Mobil Oil Australia, now ExxonMobil.  Building on this experience, the founders have spent over 20 years exploring scalable pathways for producing sustainable alternatives for fossil fuel products.

This research identified the electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide to ethylene as being the most promising pathway. We then developed an integrated process and a novel, low-cost and scalable electrolyser design that forms the heart of our system.

Our diverse range of skill sets, practical expertise and ingenuity have enabled us to make rapid progress. Our journey continues as we build our fully integrated pilot plant.
