Transforming Carbon Dioxide into Carbon-Neutral Ethylene
 

The inputs to our process are carbon dioxide, water and renewable electricity.

Inside each electrolyser cell there are two electrodes that are separated by a membrane that excludes gases but allows ions to cross. At one electrode, the carbon dioxide gas binds to the surface of the electrode where it is converted directly to ethylene (C2H4) in a complex electrochemical process involving water from the electrolyte, and electrons from the power source.

The ethylene gas is released from the electrode surface and carried out of the electrolyser where it is purified and compressed. Pure oxygen gas is produced by the other electrode. This all occurs at near ambient pressures and temperatures, improving process safety and reducing the need for complex and expensive balance of plant.

The capacity of the system is increased by using more cells that are connected to form stacks. The stacks are configured to match the available electrical voltage.

The carbon-neutral ethylene can then be converted into synthetic replacements for products that are currently made from petroleum. This gives excellent control over the chemical composition of the products, which can include fuel gas, gasoline, aviation turbine fuel, diesel, lubricants and polymers.

Note that this is not a Fischer-Tropsch based process. Those processes involve multi-step processes at high temperatures and pressures, often using precious metal-based catalysts, and suffer from other technical and environmental short-comings.

RECYCLING CARBON DIOXIDE

Our innovative electrochemical system produces carbon-neutral ethylene. This can be used to make replacements for many chemicals traditionally made from fossil fuels. Also, aviation fuel, diesel, petrol and lubricants can be made from ethylene.
